After more than 25 years in the newspaper industry, I am now working to help launch The New Bedford Lightt, a nonprofit local news website in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

In addition to news, I've produced community relations content for nonprofits, including Lifespan Hospitals in Rhode Island, the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce, and the Southeastern Massachusetts Agricultural Partnership.

I'm Andy Tomolonis

Award-winning journalist, textbook author, copywriter, bilingual podcaster, new-media strategist, multimedia producer, newsroom manager, editor,  presentation leader, writing coach ...
and knockout storyteller.

Science and Environment

Climate change resiliency, offshore wind energy, conservation, recycling? I have a passion for science, as evinced by this special report I led. It was produced by journalists at The Providence Journal, Cape Cod Times, Quincy Patriot Ledger and five other New England newspapers.

WORK EXPERIENCE

2018- 2020

Media strategist

For 20 years, I was the firewall -- the impossible-to-please assignment editor who turned down countless press releases, story pitches and so-called "trending" content from marketing specialists.

Now that I'm helping others with media placement, I haven't forgotten my editorial roots. I've always valued strong stories, and I understand what makes an editor, reporter or assignment desk manager take notice.

I work to find the most relevant story possibilities. Then I use the storytelling skills developed in 25 years of editorial management to create compelling content. Finally, I know how to pitch ... and to whom. I've developed hundreds of trusted media sources who share my passion for a well-told tale.

From databases and digital audio files to photo slideshows, polls, social media feeds and visually arresting interactive maps, there are effective storytelling tools that go beyond mere words. All of them help discriminating readers linger, which improves the ever-important metric of engagement time.

Work hard? Yes ... Play hard? That too!

When I'm not writing or building web graphics or producing podcasts, I like to get away from it all -- backpacking in the White Mountains, striper fishing in the Cape Cod Canal, taking in a concert with my daughter, hiking in the desert ... and tending to the beautiful gardens, koi pond and veggie patches in our southeastern Massachusetts yard.
